AT for Richard

After watching the assessment video between Richard and his ATP Crystal, I began to think of his problematic areas and what devices could be useful to help with his low vision. During the interview, Richard stated that he has difficulty reading the newspaper and eventually gives up in frustration. I found an article entitled Magni-Cam: An effective and versatile electronic magnifier. The Magni-Cam is a portable, hand held electronic magnifier that connects to any televison to enhance a picture, paper, or label so that it may be legible to the reader. The camara that is used to scan the objects weight less than a pound. The camara can magnify by raising or lowering the camara from the reading object or picture. This devices provides user-friendly adjustment controls that are both on the camara.

The reason why I picked this product for Richard is so that he can read the paper at home or when he is at the park. By using the head mounted display and battery back, Richard can read his paper outside of his home. All together it weighs less than five pounds. It is the lightest portable electronic magnifier! My only concern with this is that Richard may be self-conscious wearing the mounted head display. Hopefully, he will take the advice that he gave his children as the were growing up to do what your want to do regardless of what others think.

The Magni-Cam sells from $695.

Another variation is the Magni-Cam TRIAD COLOR which sells for $995. The TRIAD had three modes of operation; pure, clear, and sharp color; black and white with image enhancement; and color with enhanced color.

Jenn,

It is very interesting that this device requires a head-set like mount to view the images. I imagine (like you said) that Richard would initially have a lot of concerns regarding the attention the device may draw, but in the home it definitely sounds like a viable option. Maybe at some point in Richard's path to AT discovery he would become comfortable with using a more obvious AT and this could also be used outside his home. Overall, a very interesting device!

Jackie,
The head-set is only required if Richard wants to take it portable. In the home, it is simply pluged into the TV :)
