This link is a picture of the Magni-Cam in use. If you are a visual learner like I am, this image helped me understand how it worked.

AT for Richard
After watching the assessment video between Richard and his ATP Crystal, I began to think of his problematic areas and what devices could be useful to help with his low vision. During the interview, Richard stated that he has difficulty reading the newspaper and eventually gives up in frustration. I found an article entitled Magni-Cam: An effective and versatile electronic magnifier. The Magni-Cam is a portable, hand held electronic magnifier that connects to any televison to enhance a picture, paper, or label so that it may be legible to the reader. The camara that is used to scan the objects weight less than a pound. The camara can magnify by raising or lowering the camara from the reading object or picture. This devices provides user-friendly adjustment controls that are both on the camara.
The reason why I picked this product for Richard is so that he can read the paper at home or when he is at the park. By using the head mounted display and battery back, Richard can read his paper outside of his home. All together it weighs less than five pounds. It is the lightest portable electronic magnifier! My only concern with this is that Richard may be self-conscious wearing the mounted head display. Hopefully, he will take the advice that he gave his children as the were growing up to do what your want to do regardless of what others think.
The Magni-Cam sells from $695.
Another variation is the Magni-Cam TRIAD COLOR which sells for $995. The TRIAD had three modes of operation; pure, clear, and sharp color; black and white with image enhancement; and color with enhanced color.

The Beauty of Music
Since I work with autistic and disabled children, I wanted to find out about AT that was out there that I could possibly introduce to my clients family that would be of good use. Also, I thought this would be useful since many of you work with children or will in the future. I came across this article about music and autistic children.
Reading further into the article, the author discusses the barriers that autistic children face; impairment of social interaction, social communication, and social imagination. I was blown away at the description of each because the resemble one of my clients to a T. Music therapy involves sound and movement which can soothe children with autism because of the sensory involvement.
The core part of the article introduces computer programs that help in impairment areas by helping the learner compose their own music, autonomy, concentration, and sequencing skills to name a few. Computers are ideal because they are seen as more predictable and controllable versus adults and other children. Since working with my one client in particular I know understand why he LOVES playing on the computer! Being in control of making their own music and playing games offered by these programs allows the child to have the comfort of “being in control” while at the same time learning essential skills of daily living.
I am hoping to use this concept as a way to help my client be able to independently recognize patterns which is an area of weakness. Posted below is a link to this article.
